What Are Unbundled Legal Services?

Sometimes, a client may want to hire an attorney to help them with a specific aspect of a case, and not provide full legal representation in a traditional sense. Fortunately, attorneys are permitted to provide limited services to a client, and these are called unbundled legal services.

For example, a client who is in the process of a divorce may not want an attorney to represent them in his or her case, but may want assistance with a child support hearing that is taking place within the divorce case. That client could hire a lawyer to file a limited scope appearance in the case, indicating that the lawyer will be representing the client only for the purpose of the child support hearing. The lawyer can represent the client at the hearing and then withdraw at the conclusion of the hearing.

Unbundled legal services increase access to justice, because they allow clients who may not be able to pay for an attorney for their entire case to have an attorney represent them in just one part of the case. You can learn more about unbundled legal services through the American Bar Association and the National Law Review.
